The University Library of Pavia is one of the oldest italian public libraries and depends on the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities.
The birth of the Library has its roots in the draft reform of the public education system and university started by Maria Theresa of Austria in the second half of the eighteenth century.
In the new university building the rooms were designed by the architect Giuseppe Piermarini, and in 1778, official birth year, they hosted the "Ticinese Royal Imperial Library".
The first location of the Library was thus the Salon, then said Teresian by the name of the founder.
